17世紀(jì)初，英國倫敦附近的泰伯恩刑場有一個姓“德里克”（Goodman Derrick）的劊子手，在其常年的職業(yè)生涯中曾經(jīng)執(zhí)行過三千多次的絞刑或斬首，死在他刀下的不乏名人顯貴，其中包括英國女王伊麗莎白一世的寵臣、后因叛亂被捕的埃塞克斯伯爵。因此，德里克成了全英國的知名人士，他的名字Derrick也與死刑聯(lián)系起來了，被用來表示“死刑執(zhí)行者”、“絞刑架”。后來，起重機(jī)、石油鉆井等機(jī)械問世后，由于形狀接近絞刑架，因此也被稱為derrick。
